Center State Youth Hockey Learn to Play Program

The following is some basic information on the LTP program at CSYHA.

Session 1: October and part of November

Session 2: December and part of January

Session 3: End of January and all of February

Forty-five minute ice times are usually twice a week on weekday evenings or possibly a Sunday morning.

No prior skating or hockey experience is necessary. Teaching kids how to skate is what we do!

Our focus is providing a fun, safe, and exciting experience for all kids to learn how to skate and to begin learning the basic skills of ice hockey.

We will play some “hockey” the last ice time of Session 3. These games are NOT our focus. Our focus is F- U-N! We may add in a little skill development along the way.

Learn to Play registration is done on the website and opens May 1st.

LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY FAQ'S

Note that some of these notes were edited by CSYHA to customize these for our organization.  Should you have questions contact us and also feel free to check the USA Hockey website for more information on Hockey!

Q: WHAT IS ADM?

A: ADM or The American Developmental Model promotes the integration of cross-ice practices and games into youth hockey.
ADM raises the level of creativity among players, increase player participation, and create a positive environment for kids to play, love and excel.

Q: WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF MINI MITE & MITE HOCKEY PROGRAMS?

A: The goal for Mini-Mite/Mite Hockey Players is to pickup basic skills and have fun playing hockey.
They will learn skating forward and backwards, stick handling, puck control, passing and shooting, teamwork and the basics of hockey.
They will have a blast.

Q: WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES MY CHILD NEED?

A: Properly fitted equipment is very important. You do not need all equipment for Learn to Play but it is highly recommended as it protects your child from falls and collisions, not just checking which is not a part of LTP.  Your child should have hockey skates, shin, elbow & shoulder pads, hockey pants, hockey gloves, hockey stick, hockey helmet with full facial cage, an athletic hockey cup (for boys.), (neck & mouth guards are not required) and a hockey bag to throw it all in to. You can find most of it second hand at places like Play it Again Sports. Dick's Sporting Goods is the largest hockey retailer in the area and usually always stocks basic gear and sizes for younger kids.

Q: IS YOUTH HOCKEY FOR GIRLS TOO?

A: Absolutely. Although CSYHA does not have girl specific teams this season all of our teams are co-ed teams.

Q: DOES MY CHILD NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SKATE BEFORE JOINING?

A:No. Many of our first year skaters have never even been on the ice.   The CSYHA LTP coaches work with players of all skill levels on their skating ability, stick handling, puck control, passing and shooting.  This said, the more advanced your child's skating skills results in more advanced puck skills as comfort standing and skating allows more focus on other skills.

We focus on fun and this results in them quickly pick up the basics of skating.

Q: WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT LEVEL REQUIRED FOR MY CHILD TO PLAY YOUTH HOCKEY?

A: We will have two  2 on-ice sessions per week.  The LTP program normally meets two evenings a week for the sessions.

Q: WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS?

A: Ice time is usually for 45 minutes to 1 hour per session. Parents and guardians need to be able to get their child to the facility at least 20 minutes early to ensure adequate time to get into their equipment, lace their skates and be ready to get on to the ice.

CSYHA LTP is a volunteer organization and we do encourage participation from our parents and guardians. It is also not uncommon to see SUNY Morrisville College Hockey players as well as Cazenovia High School and CSYHA  team players on the ice helping your kids.  Many work to give back to the younger players.

Q: ONE HOUR, THAT’S GREAT! CAN I USE THE TIME TO RUN ERRANDS?

A. No. Hockey is not a "drop off” sport. Your child may need your assistance with their gear or may have to go to the restroom.

Q: CAN I COME TO PRACTICE AND CHECK THINGS OUT BEFORE SIGNING UP?

A: Of course. Session are open to anybody who wants to see what hockey is all about. Feel free to talk to the coaches after the practice or even talk to parents at the rink.

Q: WHAT OTHER COSTS ARE INVOLVED?

A: CSYHA LTP is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to developing CNY youth hockey.

The fee to join CSYHA LTP is  $85 per session or $200 for all three in a season.  Discounts are offered to families with multiple kids in the hockey programs that we offer.

A membership with USA Hockey is also required. The fee is $50 per player, coach or referee. Children under 7 have typically been free through USA Hockey!
